Enough with the Schticks

Andy, why if you are all supposedly working so hard does the painfully obvious keep slipping by?

If you haven’t noticed already, Juan Castillo has the annoying habit of using an Andy Reid-like Schtick ala “I have to do a better job.” However, Juan’s is “work hard, hard work, etc.” This obviously has been beat into our heads over the last several months since Castillo was mysteriously given the defensive coordinator position. Rich Hoffman covered this very topic in this morning’s Inquirer:

Rich Hoffman on Juan Castillo

As you can note in the article above, Castillo uses the “hard work” theme at least 15 times in one paragraph. Also, he goes into an impassioned defense of Reid, touching on Reid’s hard work, and suggesting he works 22 hours a day. First, I imagine working 22 hours a day is humanly impossible. I know these coaches are crazy, but come on, that’s just nonsense. So, he is effectively sleeping 2 hours a night? Not to mention, studies show that after a certain point your effectiveness and attention drop off a cliff after you have done a certain amount of work in a day, so maybe you should just call it a night and catch some Z’s big guy. Believe me, I’m well aware after logging full days in the library studying for the BAR exam back in the day.

But, assuming all of this “hard work”, here’s what I cannot figure out: How do insanely simple things keep slipping through the cracks that even the most elementary football mind would notice immediately? For instance:

1) Not using McCoy at all in the 4th quarter of last week’s game with a lead (Not to mention abandoning the run the last two weeks after having remarkable success with it in the previous two wins);

2) Similar point: last year in the playoffs against GB, the Packers were the worst team against the run in the league and had an explosive offense the Eagles needed to try to keep off the field. Everyone and their Grand mom in this city was talking about how they needed to commit to the run in this game. Well, not surprisingly, they proceeded to pass 50 times, McCoy only got 12 carries, Vick was being sacked by a very good GB pass rush and generally running for his life all night. Nice game plan;

3) How about continuing to not use players as they should?, eg. not matching Asomugha on Fitzgerald last week or primarily locking down the other team’s best WR each week. Continuing to use DRC is the slot despite seemingly no ability or desire to cover there. Or, how about not blitzing or changing looks on defense despite being beaten over and over again (eg. the Bears game)? Or, taking 4 weeks to abandon the Wide Nine after being thrashed by the run for several weeks effectively giving away 3 or 4 games to start the season?

4) What about the constant failures in the red zone that doomed the Eagles in the first several weeks headed by the failure to run simple running plays near the goal line?

Anyway, I think you get the point. Simply put, what the fuck are they working on exactly when these tremendously simple concepts keep missing them? It is perplexing to say the least.

These guys are doing work, not sitting in a room watching film.

Also, no offense Reid and Castillo, but could we please stop referring to this as “work”. Coaching a football team, watching film and game planning all day is every guy’s wet dream. So in essence, you are “livin’ the dream” as they say. Work is digging a friggin’ ditch, scraping paint off windows 100 ft. off the ground (as the workers are doing in my building right now as I write this), or perhaps even reading and editing a 50 page statement of work that is so dry and boring it forces your eyes to roll back into your head. Anyway, enough with the “hard work” nonsense. Everyone in the NFL works hard. All of these guys are in essence multi-million dollar executives. This would be like such a person saying to a Board of Directors: “Look guys, I know our company is going completely under, but god darnit, I’m working my friggin’ tail off.” Something tells me this wouldn’t go over too well, and guess what, it isn’t.

More Steve Smith…

Ignorance is bliss when you’re the national media

From Peter King’s mailbag yesterday:

DEFENDING REID. ”Peter, I just don’t get it. I’m a Packer fan and couldn’t really care much less about what happens to the Eagles, but I hear the trumpets sounding for Andy Reid’s job. After so many years of great football, NFC championships, and a Super Bowl appearance, is it a reality that his job is in jeopardy? After only nine games of mediocre football, does he not get any benefit of the doubt? Is this because Philly has no patience and just can’t appreciate a good coach? All I’ve ever heard about Reid is how great a coach he is and now, within a half a season, he’s got to go. It just seems crazy to me.”
– Matt, Blaine, Minn.

[Peter King]  Me too.

Oh Jesus fuck.  Here we go again.  As I’ve detailed here before (I’m still waiting for my McNabb apology) the Philadelphia fan is never given the benefit of the doubt by the national media in assessing the relative performance of their team.

We’re all snowball-throwing, Santa Claus-booing freaks of nature who never seem to rightly appreciate the utopian bliss afforded to us in this little sports town of ours.  Do these people exist?  Yes they do, just tune into 610 WIP every weekday morning from 5:30 to 10 am. Conversely, the overwhelming majority of fans appreciate what Reid has accomplished with the Eagles during his tenure here. But anyone with any kind of knowledge of the situation know Reid and Company have always been a frustrating bunch to deal with.  And this year is just the icing on the cake.  Let’s take a look at the timeline here shall we?

In a self-described “all-in” year, Andy Reid decides to make the following decisions with his defense/special teams:

  1. Hire Jim Washburn to employ his “Wide-9″ defensive scheme prior to hiring a defensive coordinator.  Great, that’ll help attract high-end coordinator talent – dictating their scheme before they even take the reigns (this is my conspiracy theory why the Eagles went with Castillo – he wouldn’t quibble with putting the cart before the horse).
  2. Hire Juan Castillo, an offensive coordinator to run his defense.  The defense was historically bad in 2010, Castillo asserts that it must be simplified.
  3. Jettison kicker David Akers in favor of a 5th round draft pick.  Jettison punter Sav Rocca in favor of an UDFA punter.  (Both Akers and Rocca are having significantly better seasons than their replacements btw).
  4. Sign Jason Babin, Cullen Jenkins, Nnamdi Asomugha.  Trade for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.  Thus, significantly upgrading the defensive talent of the team.
  5. Sign WR Steve Smith ($2.28 million) and QB Vince Young ($4 million) rather than address LB or Safety concerns (again critical positions for run stopping in the Wide-9) or current players under contract (DeSean Jackson for instance).
  6. Install 4th round draft pick Casey Matthews as the starting MLB ahead of Jamar Chaney, the only LB who showed promise last year – at the MLB spot no doubt. Move Chaney to the SAM spot.  Make no further improvements to the LB position – a position critical to filling the gaps in the Wide-9 DL splits.
  7. Install DRC in the slot, a position he’s never played in his career.

The result (despite the infusion of talent)?  The defense was historically bad last year, but guess what, it’s even worse this year.  Your defensive coordinator (God bless his hard-working soul) has no friggin’ clue, totally mishandling Asomugha, staying with Matthews for THREE(!) games, and forgoing any type of run-stopping adjustment to the defensive scheme until game 6 against the Redskins.   Oh, throw in the fact that Castillo is totally unable to adjust to in-game schemes, thus blowing five 4th quarter leads (an NFL record – how’s that for historically bad?) yet he still remains the coordinator.  This is all on the head of Reid.

Then we can look at the usual Reid insanity – the passaholic tendencies in the face of logic and rationality.   We have LeSean McCoy (who never fumbles), the best running back in the NFL?  Oh, well let’s just keep passing the ball rather than protecting the lead and milking clock with the run.  Our top two receivers are out of the game?  No problem, my pigheadedness will obscure the actuality of the situation.  Hey Green Bay Packer fan – this behavior is the equivalent of the Packers ignoring Aaron Rodgers and their passing game to continually pound John Kuhn into the line of scrimmage.  I guess as a Packer fan, when your rewarded with 2 Super Bowl Championships in a span of 14 years, patience is key. The Philadelphia Eagles are on year 51 since their last championship.  They are 3-9 in their last 12 games – losing games in historic fashion in ways we’ve seen many many times before.  It’s time to move on.

Just a side note here – there was a steady drumbeat by the Packer faithful to fire Mike McCarthy after they started 3-3 and endured consecutive losses to the Redskins and the Dolphins, LAST YEAR!!  Now fuck off please.
